Renew Checkouts

You can extend the due date of a checkout by scanning or entering a copy or item barcode.

Note: This topic covers checkout renewals for Library Manager, Resource Manager, and Textbook Manager.

Perform a Global Renew

Note: Checked-out resources can only be renewed if they have a loan policy interval that includes an associated calendar date or number of days. The Renew button only appears when the loan period changes the due date or has been updated. If the loan policy is Unlimited, the Renew button does not appear. To see it, check the item in and out again.

Renew Individual Library Materials, Resources, or Textbooks

  1. Select Circulation > Renew > By Copy sub-tab.
  2. Scan the barcode into the Find Copy field, or type it and click Go.
  3. Choose Library Materials, Resources, or Textbooks from the In drop-down, if available. 

You can search the catalog by entering a keyword, and then, select the correct one from the search results list.

If Destiny encounters any problems with the renewal, an alert message appears.

Destiny uses the following due dates for renewals:

  • Library materials: Loan periods defined in Admin > Library Policies.

  • Resources: Loan periods defined in Admin > Resource Policies.

  • Textbook Manager: Class due date or the default textbook due date.

You can also do any of the following:

  • To view more information, click the patron's or copy's/item's barcode number.

  • To clear the information, click Reset on the side menu.

  • To change a renewal's due date, click Change Date.

Renew an ILL

If a lending library allows borrowing libraries to renew ILL materials, do one of the following:

  • Open the patron's Patron Status page, and click Renew next to the copy.
  • Re-check it out in Circulation > Check Out.
Note: If your district has enabled district-defined ILLs, date calculation for days to ship and days to circulate is controlled at the district level. The loan policy at the district overrides the site loan policy.

Renew Textbooks by Date

Note: You can renew textbooks by date only in Textbook Manager.

If you have checked out multiple textbooks with the wrong due date, you can change due dates for all copies globally.

  1. Select Circulation > Renew > By Date sub-tab.
  2. In the Find all Textbooks with due date field, enter the incorrect date that was used. Click for a calendar.
  3. Use the Assign new due date to enter the correct due date.
  4. Click Preview.
  5. When the Job Manager opens, click View.
  6. If the updated checkouts are correct, click Update at the bottom of the summary to change the due dates.

You can renew a copy or resource item in Circulation > Patron Status.

Perform a Global Renew

Global Renew lets sites renew all library materials or resources that meet the selected criteria.

District users need either the Manage Library Materials for the District or Manage Resources for the District permission to see Circulation when logged in at the district level. Based on the permission, they can perform a global renew for the district's library materials and resources.

Note: A district user's resource group setting is honored when renewing resources.

To renew library materials or resources, log in to the district or site and do the following:

  1. Select Circulation > Renew > Global sub-tab.
  2. Select Library Materials or Resources from the Renew all drop-down.
  3. If you selected Resources, use the Resource Type drop-down to select the types of resources to renew.
  4. In the Assign new due date field, enter or select a date using Calendar icon..
  5. Follow the instructions for your product:
    For Library Manager:For Resource Manager:
    • Use the Material Type drop-down to select the types of materials to renew.

    • To select specific Circulation Types, click Update. Select the appropriate checkboxes and click OK.

    • Enter a keyword in the Displayable Name/Title field.
    • Select the Include Unlimited checkbox to include resource items with an unlimited loan period.
  6. Use the following table to complete the fields:

    Due dateEnter the currently assigned due date.
    Patron PersonaChoose the applicable patron group.
    Patron TypeClick Update to include only specific patron types. Select the appropriate checkboxes, and click OK.
    Graduation YearEnter the year to renew resources for patrons graduating in a specific year.
    Grade LevelEnter the year to renew resources for patrons in a specific grade level.
  7. Click Preview to see the results of your selections.
  8. On the Job Manager page, find the Update Due Dates Preview job, and then click View. A Job Summary with the results of your global renew selections appears.
  9. Review the library materials or resources that will be processed with the new due date, and then click Update to accept the global renew.
